The Grey Friars, or Franciscans, were established in Old Winchelsea in the early thirteenth century. Their story became part of the history of the new town as well.
Greyfriars gives Revelation in Ruins a real historical setting. The novel’s archaeological discoveries and religious mysteries are fictional developments within a place with a documented past.
The contrast between surviving stone and missing knowledge is one of the reasons historic ruins offer such fertile ground for mystery fiction.
